March’s Book Club Meeting in London. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
“Hey, so I think we need a logo… what do you think?”
This was the start of a fairly innocuous phone call to a friend of mine in Canada. Graphic designer extraordinaire. We’d known each other for most of our lives and I let him live at my cottage for multiple summers when we were in University so in my eyes, he was forever in my debt. He’s obsessed with Apple Computers and I don’t think he’s ever said NO to anything I’ve ever asked. It took a few weeks to get a reply – and perhaps a few friendly reminders .. but sure enough a couple weeks later he sent me a plethora of logos to choose from. This was years ago now, but I predictably chose the pink flowery one to go with my “girly book club”. And that’s how we got to where we are today. I didn’t really ever think must about it much. A complete volunteer pet project. He would update the logo as the group grew, adding Toronto, then some US cities to the logo and eventually Wellington in New Zealand and even Hong Kong. My happy pink logo was in its element.
It still is I guess you could say.
But, it’s time to think broader and bolder. When you log onto our website and see our logo there is a fairly BIG risk you’ll think you’ve landed on a young Girls book club, and that not so much the image we’re going for these days. Everyone has an opinion – so we put it to a poll and amazingly over 50% of those who voted – and MANY voted were in agreement. So here we go, listening to our public and although some of you have said you really were drawn in to our old logo it’s time for change! I’ll miss the old logo but after a few months of painstaking effort on the part of quite a few people – here we go! New Logo to be SHORTLY released … stay tuned!
